Spurs claimed their first major honour when they took the Southern League Championship at the end of the 1899/1900 season. The following season, they captured the F.A. Cup for the first time – the last club ever to do so whilst not a member of the Football League, or more latterly the Premiership (see my companion volumes). In 1908, the Spurs escaped the confines of the South when they gained admission to the Football League in the most extraordinary circumstances. This is the story of how Spurs first entered the national competition, climbing from the Second Division to the First at the first attempt, and claiming a place once and for all among the footballing elite. Experience the season, match by match, as the Spurs cast all aside before them in their triumphal march towards positioning themselves among the footballing elite.
