In 1889, a group of prominent football clubs denied entry to the newly founded Football League came together to form their own rival organisation - the Football Alliance. The Wednesday, then the premiere club in Sheffield, were one of the founder members and went on to become the first ever champions. That same season, the Wednesday reached the Final of the F.A.
