At the beginning of the 1891/92 season there were two professional Association football clubs in the (then) town of Sunderland. By the end of that season one of those clubs has established itself as the premier organisation in England, whilst the other, in the shadow of that success, had fallen by the wayside. The 1891/92 season, only their second in the Football League, was the start of a golden period for Sunderland. Over the next five seasons they won the League Championship three times whilst only conceding a single defeat in a League fixture on home turf. For their near neighbours Sunderland Albion, an offshoot of the Sunderland club, however, the sudden success of the 'mother' club robbed them of the vital support they needed to survive financially. Consequently Sunderland's first season of major success became Albion's last season of existence. This is the story of that season for both clubs - told through the press of the period.
Every game of the season for both clubs covered (over 100 period match reports), full period match report and additional commentary by the author. Background story runs from the birth of both clubs to the demise of the Albion club.
